UK AAE Award winner: Best Online Conference

The Royal Microscopical Society has been at the forefront of microscopy since 1839. It has over 1300 members ranging from Honorary Fellows to Student Members.

The Microscience Microscopy Congress is their flagship five day conference, held biannually.  Due to COVID-19, the RMS decided to run their 2021 congress online for the first time. The urgent challenge was to transform a complex real life event into an immersive online experience.

They selected the ReadyMembership platform by Pixl8 to host 180 sessions across 6 simultaneous live streams, plus commercial workshops, poster presentations and exhibitors.

It was highly successful with 1300 attendees and 51 exhibitors praising the congress and its platform which they still use to access on-demand content.

Key highlights included the ability to:

  • Jump in and out of multiple live streams and sessions from the main schedule
  • Watch live scientific sessions in pages with timing countdowns & speaker info
  • Comment and ask speakers questions using the live chat function and Q&A box
  • Join commercial workshops on external Zoom links (managed within the platform)
  • Talk to exhibitors and book meetings with them on their virtual stands
  • View a gallery of scientific posters and join break-out sessions to discuss work

The judges said:

A great event with some impressive collaborations. Amazing to produce so many streams online in parallel, to get sponsor and exhibitor promotion sorted - the greatest challenge with conferences at this time.

UK AAE Award Winner: Best Digital Transformation

The Association for Clinical Biochemistry and Laboratory Medicine (ACB) has over 2000 members in the UK and globally. It works to promote the highest standards in laboratory testing and patient care.

Four disconnected systems have been replaced by user-friendly, future-proofed features on one ReadyMembership platform. The ACB can manage all their online membership activities from one place. Key features have been the members’ portal, events functionality including vimeo streams and livechat plus the science knowledge hub.

Following the launch the results have been remarkable:

  • annual conference has increased by 30%
  • membership base has grown by 4.7%
  • number of overseas members has expanded by 18%

New features are planned and the new platform is at the heart of their strategy for delivering member services going forward.

The judges said:

This is an example of a well designed plan, having clearly identified the weaknesses in the previous system, that has subsequently focused on delivering to that plan to a high level of success.
